Wednesday, Oct. 10 – Furnace Mountain
This 7-mile hike starts and finishes with a traverse of the open talus slopes of Blackrock and offers 360- degree views of the southern mountains. From Blackrock, we’ll ascend a shoulder of Trayfoot Mountain, before descending 600′ and ascending 600′ to the summit of Furnace Mountain. This is one of the lesser-visited peaks in Shenandoah National Park and has unique vegetation that our leaders, John Holden and Chip Morgan, will help us appreciate.
Meet at the Blackrock Summit parking lot, just north of milepost 85 at 9:00 am. Expect a 5-6 hour hike. Bring food and water and prepare for variable weather.
Saturday, Oct. 20 – South River Falls/Pocosin Mission
What better way to enjoy the autumn colors then a hike to one of Shenandoah’s most popular waterfalls – South River Falls. From there, we will head to the Upper Pocosin Mission ruins and return via the Appalachian Trail. This is a strenuous, 9-mile hike (or 10.3 miles if we go to the base of the falls).
Our guide is Lauralee Bliss (Appalachian Trail 4,000-miler and Ridgerunner). We will meet on Saturday, October 20th at 9am at the South River Falls trailhead located in the South River picnic area (MP 62.8). Bring water, snacks, and lunch. Wear sturdy footwear.
Space is limited and RSVPs are required. Let us know you’ll be joining us by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org or calling (434) 293-2728. Please let us know if you are interested in carpooling.
