As the past year has shown, wildfires have become more prevalent in our region. The fires at Quaker Run, Royal Orchard, and Rocky Branch in Shenandoah were challenging for NPS staff, but they persevered, and the park’s lands are thriving. While the East coast experiences fewer wildfires than the western United States, wildfire seasons are changing due to recent, rapid changes in climate.

Join us for a webinar about wildland fires with Special guest Bridget Harrison, Assistant Engine Captain in the Fire Management Branch at Shenandoah National Park. Bridget will talk about the power and impact of wildland fires on public lands, how the park handles fire, the positive and negative impacts from wildfires, and how healthy ecosystems depend on wildland fires as a natural process. She will also share what to do to mitigate the risk of fire while camping, how to be aware of what makes conditions high-risk for wildfires, and what to do should a wildfire occur.

The National Park Service is committed to the best fire management strategies on NPS land, to protect people, parks, and surrounding communities.
