The Grateful Appreciation Fund

Supporting Search and Rescue and Public Safety

“We had a tragic episode in the park, and the park responded to it with a vigor and compassion that was beyond the call of duty. The people providing assistance were exceptional, and we want to make sure they get the recognition and support they need.” – Founding donors of the Grateful Appreciation Fund

The Grateful Appreciation Fund was created to honor the extraordinary Search and Rescue teams who safeguard every visitor’s well-being in Shenandoah National Park. Your support ensures they have the resources, equipment, and training needed to respond with the same compassion and dedication—no matter what emergency arises.

The fund was inspired by two park visitors who experienced firsthand the care and professionalism of the Search and Rescue team during a personal tragedy. Moved by their experience, they wanted to create a way to give back and ensure these exceptional individuals receive the recognition and support they deserve. The fund provides immediate, flexible funding for everything from lifesaving equipment to small essentials that can prevent emergencies in the backcountry.

Beyond responding to crises, the Grateful Appreciation Fund also supports Preventive Search and Rescue (PSAR) initiatives, which focus on early intervention to keep potential risks from turning into emergencies. From bottles of water and snacks to critical training and equipment, your contribution helps the team act quickly, efficiently, and compassionately—keeping Shenandoah a safe and welcoming place for all who visit.

Shenandoah National Park’s Search and Rescue Squad works hard to prevent emergencies by making sure hikers are prepared before they hit the trail. But in case of an emergency, they are prepared to save lives. Watch to learn more about their gear and hear tips for visiting Shenandoah safely in every season!
